Yoga Class for Post-Stroke Patients

A study at Indiana University has incorporated the use of yoga into rehabilitation for post-stroke patients.  The initial idea for this study was to improve patient's ability to cope s/p fall.

"... research into therapeutic uses for yoga is "really taking off," particularly in mental health fields. Clinically, she has been watching a small trend of occupational therapists and physical therapists also becoming yoga therapists".

We wonder how many therapists do use yoga as part of the rehab treatment plan?

Creative Outlet for Parkinson's Patients

"Music and drama therapy addresses many of the physical and emotional components of Parkinson's disease. Benefits include improvement of physical coordination and functional movement, postural awareness, as well as speech and voice enrichment."

This article highlights a class for Parkinson's patients at Northwestern Memorial's Prentice Women's Hospital that emphasises singing and playing musical instruments.  What a great idea!

Traditional PT Exercises Following Stroke Beneficial

"Locomotor training, including the use of body-weight support in stepping on a treadmill, was not shown to be superior to progressive exercise at home managed by a physical therapist."

This is the conclusion reached by researchers following 408 participants.  The original article was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Learning How Not to Stutter in the Movie "King's Speech"

The King's Speech is a film that "...depicts King George VI, father of England's Queen Elizabeth II, as a reluctant leader tortured by his stuttering. But with a sense of duty as England confronts a second world war, he musters the courage to seek speech therapy so he can address and calm an anxious nation".

"The focus on George's relationship with his eccentric speech therapist who insists on treating him as an equal makes the king a sort of everyman for people who stutter".

The above excerpts are from an article in TwinCities.com.  The entire article discusses techniques used in the film and how adults and kids alike have related to King George IV and picked up tips from the movie!  A fun movie with a hero Speech Therapist!

Pool and Physical Therapy Business Turnaround

"In 2009, CompletePT Pool and Land Physical Therapy had its best year ever, with revenue of more than $3 million. But then, starting in January 2010, the company had to confront a series of setbacks that included insurance reimbursement issues, unexpected delays in a pool-remodeling project and an employee who was engaging in unauthorized borrowing."

Physical Therapy and Spinal Cord Treatment

Very interesting article about Rob Summers, the first person ever to stand voluntarily after a spinal cord injury  Medical News Today reports, "Summers does it with the help of a pacemaker-like device that sends a gentle electric current through 16 electrodes implanted in his spine. The device doesn't make his muscles move -- he does. This epidural stimulation excites the neurons in his spine, allowing them to receive and react to sensory information from his legs".

We are curious to learn more about his specific therapy rehabilitation and futher studies.

Low Level Laser Light Therapy Used By Physical Therapists, Chiropractors, and Athletic Trainers

"Multi Radiance Medical develops and manufactures the most advanced laser therapy equipment on the market. The company's MR4™ laser uses Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) to treat inflammation, provide deep tissue therapy and accelerate pain relief to help athletes minimize down time. It is the first laser therapy equipment to combine the entire therapeutic light spectrum into a single technology.

Used by athletic trainers, physicians and physical therapists working with professional, Olympic, college and high school athletes, the MR4 uses 25,000-50,000 mW of super pulsed laser power to accelerate drug-free pain relief. With its LaserStim™ and LaserShower emitters, the device helps identify tissue inflammation and treat large muscle groups quickly."

For more information click on the link above to view the entire article.

LLLT is an interesting course topic.  With lots of professionals using these devices, it will be interesting to see the long term use in the rehab world.

Marketers Using Online Resources

Marketing Sherpa has just published an article regarding marketing budgets.  Company budgets are speculated to focus more on websites, email, internet searches, and social media resouces and less on more traditional means such as direct mail and print ads.   Here is the link to an interesting chart:  http://www.marketingsherpa.com/1news/chartofweek-01-25-11-lp.htm

It's nice to know more companies will be taking our favorite Green approach!

Adaptable for Life

Had a wonderful conversation this week with Jennifer DeRosa, owner of Adaptable for Life.  This is a therapist owned agency dedicated to providing consultative services to organizations that work with individuals with disabilities and age related issues, as well as these individuals and their families directly.  It was fun sharing stories about our companies and discussing marketing strategies.  My eyes are opening to the fact many therapists indeed do own their own businesses and strive toward improving their professions, whether in a traditional or non-traditional manner.
